KOCHI: The LDF backed independent candidate has won the Vyttila Janatha bypoll defeating the UDF candidate by 58 votes. The LDF candidate Baiju Yesudas alias Baiju Thottali got 1,686 votes against the Congress candidate Shelbi Antony's 1,628. Now, if Yesudas is included in the finance standing committee, then both fronts will have five members each in the committee. The ruling front could do nothing in the past three years," said K J Antony, opposition leader of Kochi Corporation. The LDF has already a clear majority in the health standing committee which was headed by UDF's V K Minimol.

The BJP's P K Gokulan got 378 votes while Fojy John of AAP got 119 votes. The immediate outcome of the result is that a section in the Congress has demanded a change of guard in the wake of the UDF's defeat. LDF has also demanded the resignation of mayor and deputy mayor. The byelection to the Vyttila Janatha division was necessitated following the death of M Premachandran of the Congress. It is the anti-people attitude and misadministration corporation authorities that resulted in the UDF losing the seat. The ruling front could do nothing in the past three years," said K J Antony, opposition leader of Kochi Corporation. "The results show that people are against them. Owning up the responsibility of the failure, mayor Soumini Jain and deputy mayor T J Vinod should step down," LDF parliamentary party secretary V P Chandran said. After Premachandran's demise, the strength of UDF members in the crucial finance standing committee fell to five against the four of LDF. Now, if Yesudas is included in the finance standing committee, then both fronts will have five members each in the committee. As deputy mayor T J Vinod is the head of the finance standing committee, lack of a majority in the crucial standing committee would be a major headache for the UDF as there won't be a majority for the ruling front to approve decisions. Now the LDF will attempt to wrest at least one more standing committee. The LDF has already a clear majority in the health standing committee which was headed by UDF's V K Minimol. She had quit after LDF's plan to move a no-confidence motion against her. The Left front has already started the move to wrest the town planning standing committee with the help of T K Asharaf of Muslim League.
