Kerala Hartal by Youth Congress turns violent in Ernakulam

KOCHI: The state-wide hartal called by Youth Congress following the murder of two party workers in Kasargod hit public life in Ernakulam as protests by Kerala Students Union and Youth Congress workers turned violent at many places.Clashes were reported between the police and protesters at KPCC Junction, Kalamassery, HMT Junction, Kaloor, Palluruthy when the workers tried to block vehicles and close shops forcefully. The police intervened and removed the protesters forcefully.

Buses and private vehicles were stopped at Angamaly and Perumbavoor creating tension in the area but the police intervened and resolved the issue.Police forces have been deployed at all major spots and are keeping a strict vigil to maintain law and order. The officials were given strict orders to take stringent action against the protesters and ensure security of people, motorists and shopowners who are not cooperating with the Hartal.Though KSRTC conducted services early morning, most of the buses stayed off the roads following blockades later in the day. Though private vehicles are seen plying on the roads, the protest across the city is affecting traffic.Most of the shops are functioning as merchants and traders association have decided to defy the hartal call. Educational institutions remain shut and all exams scheduled for the day have been postponed.
