KOCHI: With frequent fire outbreaks being reported from the premises of solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram , the district administration has asked police to look into the incident and book corporation officials if found negligence on their part. The Friday’s fire was the fifth major blaze reported from the plant this year.“Police have been asked to inquire if there was any lapse on the part of corporation officials. If any negligence is found, then case would be registered against the officials,” said district collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla.Back-to-back incidents of fire outbreaks had been giving tough time for the fire and rescue services department.Corporation authorities are yet to construct sumps and set up overhead water tanks so that fire and rescue officials could fetch water from the tanks, in case of an emergency. There are many objects that are prone to catch fire,” said a corporation official.“Previous incidents of fire had been reported from another area where garbage from the corporation and other local bodies had been stacked. Following the cases of fire, we had been focussing there. We used to sprinkle water in the garbage to prevent fire,” the official said. The official said that the civic body is exploring the possibilities of carrying out scientific capping for treating plastic waste.“We had invited tenders for the purpose and three firms had attended the tender process.
