Kochi's flood-hit families get new houses

Vehicles up to four tonnes will be able to ply on this bridge. Seeing this, the Navy had promised us to construct a new house in place of the old one, which consists of two bedrooms, a kitchen, a hall and a toilet. Public works department had declared that the bridge was unsafe even for pedestrian traffic.The new bridge will be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge, and will be 50 metre long and 3.5 metre wide.

KOCHI: Flag officer commanding-in-chief, Southern Naval Command (SNC) Vice-Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla handed over keys of the newly-constructed houses to three flood-affected families at Cheriya Kadamakudy on Thursday.The houses — built as part of the rehabilitation activities being undertaken by SNC after the August deluge last year — were handed over to Binu P P of Puliyal Parambil house, Mariyamma of Pashni Parambil house and Joseph Antony of Madathil Parambil house.The houses, constructed at a total cost of Rs 28 lakh, were built as per specifications and suggestions of the house owners.Each house has two bedrooms, a drawing room and a kitchen with modern amenities such as vitrified tiles in all the rooms and electrical fittings. Cheriya Kadamakudy will be a green village in the next few weeks.The Navy also announced construction of a steel arch bridge connecting Cheriya Kadamakudy with Pizhala Island and laid the foundation stone for the same on Thursday.Residents have been requesting for a new bridge as the existing concrete walkway bridge has been in a dilapidated condition for long. Public works department had declared that the bridge was unsafe even for pedestrian traffic.The new bridge will be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge, and will be 50 metre long and 3.5 metre wide. Vehicles up to four tonnes will be able to ply on this bridge.
