Recurring man-made fires ravage forestland in Idukki

IDUKKI: Recurring incidents of man-made forest fire have destroyed large areas of forestland in Marayoor and Kanthalloor here.As many as 23 forest fires were reported from Marayoor range office in the past month.Over 11 hectares of forestland have been gutted in Marayoor and Kanthalloor areas. “These were man-made fires, and we suspect that tribespeople were involved,” said Marayoor range officer Job J Neryamparampil. We need help from the public to stop the fire at Anamudi Shola National Park,” said Chinnar wildlife sanctuary assistant warden P M Prabhu. Probe is on to find the culprits, added Neryamparampil.Meanwhile, as wildfire continued to rage parts of Anamudi Shola National Park on Sunday, forest department has sought help from residents to bring the situation under control.“Forest department officials tried to control the fire but in vain.
