more-in KOCHI: The Crime Branch has wrapped up its preliminary investigation into the death of MBBS student Shamna Tasneem of the Ernakulam Government Medical College. The investigation team is now awaiting response from the medical apex body to its written queries including the crucial aspect whether there was medical negligence as alleged by relatives of the deceased. Shamna, a second year medical student, had died of a severe allergic reaction to ceftriaxone injection last July. A three-member panel, which probed her death, found “casual, indifferent dealing, if not callousness, was palpable at every stage in the care and treatment given to the patient.” Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police G.H. Yatish Chandra convened a high-level meeting of the investigation officers here on Friday. According to a senior official, the case is “ready” for follow-up action including arrest. However, that depends on the medical apex body report, which is expected in a week. The apex body had reportedly met earlier this week and arrived at a conclusion on medical negligence though it was yet to be made public. The investigators relied on the apex body report owing to their lack of expertise in determining whether medical negligence resulted in Shamna’s death. Among other things, the questionnaire submitted to the apex body seeks to know whether there was sufficient stock of medicines. A panel headed by Joint Director of Medical Education (JDME) K. Sreekumari in its report had found failure in administering proper treatment and consequently, Jills George, head of the department of medicine, was placed under suspension pending inquiry. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy called on Shamna’s father K.A. Abooty and pledged his support to the bereaved family.
