Torrential rain causes heavy damage in Nagaland

KOHIMA: More than 50 families have been evacuated from around 49 houses damaged by landslides triggered by torrential rains in Nagaland . However, restoration works are in progress while passage for light vehicle has been cleared, sources said. As a result, vehicular movement has been completely blocked. Properties and agricultural fields have also been damaged badly but no loss of human lives has been reported, sources said.At least 13 houses have been damaged from the Naga Hospital Colony and 36 houses damaged in Pezielietsie colony within Kohima town, affecting at least 54 families, additional deputy commissioner of Kohima, Lithrongla said.The numbers are increasing every hour even as landslides are being triggered by incessant rains, she added.A major mudslide has also occurred this evening at the Officers Hill but details are still awaited, she said.Asked about availability of the essential commodities, she said rice and vegetables are being transported by light vehicles but, there might be shortage of petrol, diesel and gas if the road condition continues to deteriorate.A major traffic-easing road diversion in Kohima town was also completely cut off last night as a wall near the Soul Harvest Church was damaged in the mudslide.ADC Kohima said the heavy rain also damaged roads in several places along the NH-29 connecting Kohima and Mokokchung .
