Eviction drive carried out in Ripu-Chirang reserve forest

As per official data, 2385.14 hectares under Kachugaon forest division, 4262.7 hectares in Dhansiri division, 8894.21 hectares in Chirang division, 3332.8 hectares in Porbotjhora division and 6337.6 hectares in Baksa division are under encroachment. KOKRAJHAR: Over 140 temporary sheds, built illegally by encroachers inside the Ripu-Chirang Reserve forest bordering Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, were destroyed in an eviction drive carried out by the forest department on Friday.The eviction drive was carried out jointly by Chirang Forest Division, Kokrajhar Hultugaon Forest Division, NGOs and the local public with the help of police and civil administration at Dolpani block areas under Runikhata forest range.Sources said around 200 men, led by Chirang DFO Raju Brahma, Hultugaon DFO Kamleswar Brahma, range officers, forest staff and officials carried out the drive with active cooperation from local villagers.Hultugaon Forest Range Division DFO Kamleswar Brahma said the eviction was carried out following an order from the state government and the BTC administration to carry out an eviction drive against fresh illegal encroachments in forest land to recover government land from encroachers. The encroachers have reportedly beein living in villages like Gwmwtao, No 1 Lwkiguri, No 2 Lwkiguri and areas of Dolpani under Runikhata forest range in Chirang forest division.The majority of the encroachers have come from Dhekiajuli , Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh and they have been clearing up the forest area under Chirang district forest division, said forest officials. They added that the eviction drive will continue after Durga Puja and the illegal settlers have already been notified.As per data available with the forest department in BTC, nearly 40,000 hectares of forest land in BTC are under illegal encroachment. He said the Ripu-Chirang Reserve Forest falls under the buffer zone of the Manas National Park and is protected for wild animals, elephants, butterflies, deer, golden langurs, leopard, birds etc, and needs to be preserved.Chirang Forest Division DFO Raju Brahma said illegal encroachers have been found to be engaged in poaching, cutting sal trees and destroying dense jungles.Officials said approximately 2000 sheds or huts and 16,000 (sixteen thousand) people have encroached into Ripu-Chirang Reserve Forest.
