Kolhapur: The water supply to the city has been reduced by 33% in the last two days owing to shutting down of pumping stations located at Kasba Bawada and Shinganapur.“The defect in the electricity substations led to stopping of the pumps. Some minor repairs were also needed to be carried at these pumping stations. Since the last two days, two pumps at Shinganapur, one each at Balinga and Kasba Bawada were shut — leading to reduction in lifting of water from Panchaganga,” a civic official said.He claimed that the pumping station from Kasba Bawada has started functioning from Saturday morning, while the repair works at other pumping stations will be carried out for one more day.“The water supply to most parts of the city will normalise soon. However, for those parts that are dependent on Shinganapur pumping station for water, will get supply at less pressure,” he said. The shutting of the pumping stations led to water scarcity at 50 places and the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) deployed water tankers for the locals at these places.Suresh Kulkarni, hydraulic engineer of the KMC, said, “The pumping from Kasba Bawada filter started in the morning after carrying out the repair work. The fourth pump at the Shinganapur pumping station started late and we are expecting it to resume lifting of water effectively from Saturday evening. The water supply to some parts of E-ward will be at low pressure, while for other parts the supply has been normalised.”The KMC lifts around 120 million litre of water per day from these pumping stations.
