Kolhapur: Karveer police arrested a 27-year-old named Prateek Suhas Sarnaik for allegedly murdering 30-year-old Chintu Prakash Powar (alias Prateek) on May 20. Police have recovered a revolver and four rounds from the arrested .Sarnaik was presented before local court on Tuesday. He was was sent to seven days police custody upto May 27.A police officer attached with Karveer police station said, “During the investigation, Sarnaik confessed that he had committed crimes and personal rivalry was the motive behind the murder.”“He has been booked under several sections of IPC including section 302 (murder), 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and section 3 (1) and 25 of Indian Arms Act,” the officer said.Powar, a resident of Dwarkanagar, near Datta temple on Pachgaon road at Jaragnagar in Kolhapur was shot dead on Sunday night around 10.45pm. Police rushed to the spot after they received the information.The officer added, “Three eye-witnesses were present at the spot when the crime took place. We are gathering information from them.”He said, “As per the information we have gathered so far, there was a personal rivalry between Powar and Sarnaik. According to Sarnaik, two weeks ago Powar had beaten Sarnaik's two friends and was planning to overpower him. To maintain a stronghold in the area, Sarnaik decided to eliminate Powar.”The officer added, “Later he hid at one of his relatives’ place. However we managed to find him and arrested him.”
