KOLHAPUR: A doctor was arrested by Sangli City police from Vita on Saturday in connection with illegal abortion case.Two doctors - Rupali Chougule and her husband Vijaykumar - have already been arrested and sent to police custody. During investigation the name of another doctor - identified as Avijit Mahadik - came up. He allegedly used to refer pregnant women seeking illegal abortion to the Chougule couple."We received information about Mahadik during interrogation from one of the women who got her baby aborted. We have also learnt that more doctors are involved in the racket. We have traced 23 women who had consulted for illegal abortion and the enquiry with them is going on," a police officer said.A team led by Sangli city deputy superintendent of police Ashok Virkar raided Mahadik's hospital. "After interrogating him for an hour, the team brought him to Sangli where he was produced before a court. He has been remanded in police custody till September 28. The court has also extended the custody of the Chougule couple," he said."We have detained a medical representative who was providing medicines required to carry out the abortion. Also, we have traced the centres where the pregnant women carried out the tests and check-up," he added.The police official claimed that they have come across a significant lead regarding the racket and the same will be revealed in the next couple of days.
