Kolhapur: Amid demands of sugarcane farmers for higher payments, the sugar mills have decided to stop cane crushing till government assures them of financial assistance for paying the dues to the farmers.The decision was taken during a meeting of representatives of sugar mills from Kolhapur district at a city-based hotel on Tuesday. Representatives of as many as 22 sugar mills, including both cooperative and private mills, were present for the meeting.A press release issued after the meeting said that the millers discussed various issues following the demands made by the farmers’ organisations and their agitation, valuation of sugar, loan provided by banks for paying to the farmers, instalments of banks, production cost and expenditure of cutting and transportation.“Considering all the aspects, the millers have come to the conclusion that they are unable to accede to the demand made by farmers until state government provides financial assistance. Mills that have started cane crushing will stop the process and thow who are yet to start the crushing will maintain status quo till government assures financial assistance,” the release said.
