Centre eroding institutional independence: Ex-CM Chavan

Kolhapur: The recent incidents of disagreement between the Centre and autonomous organisations like RBI and CBI suggests that government is overpowering these institutes and this will endanger the democracy in future, senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said on Wednesday.“The government’s action against RBI considering the section 7(1) of RBI Act and the RBI officials meeting scheduled on November 19 indicates that the government is trying to undermine the independence of the RBI. The intervention of government in the functioning of CBI also indicates the same. The Supreme Court has asked the government to provide details about the Rafael deal. All these incidents indicate that the Modi government is not considering the Independence of these organisations and wants them to function as per their demand,” he said.Speaking on the drought situation in Maharashtra, he said, “This year probably we will be facing the worse situation than the draught of 1972. This year, the situation has been worsening since October due to reduction of water storage in the dams. People are migrating from drought-hit region to other places in search of water, food and jobs. In 2012-13 when we were in power, we had tackled the drought problem successfully taking care of people as well as provided fodder to the cattle from region affected due to drought. The state government is failing to address these issues and there is a need to take immediate steps to tackle drought in the state,” he said.Being asked about the seat sharing formula and party’s strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the former chief minister said, “Initially, we are discussing with more than 10 political parties from Maharashtra regarding the strategy to be followed for the upcoming elections. The seat sharing will be mainly between the Congress and NCP and the respective parties will provide the quota to the parties that are aligning with either Congress or NCP.”
