Kolhapur: Union minister of commerce and industry Suresh Prabhu said that Kolhapur airport will soon have a cargo hub and night landing facility.“Under the central government’s regional connectivity scheme, we have allotted funds for the development of Kolhapur airport. Now, the flight operations have started from Kolhapur to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Soon, other major cities will be connected with Kolhapur through air service,” said Prabhu.He was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new terminal building and ATC tower of Kolhapur Airport at Ujalaiwadi on Saturday.“Apart from this, we are planning to develop a cargo hub at the airport and start cargo service to Mumbai and other places. Farmers from Kolhapur region produce agricultural products such as sugar and allied agro products. The cargo service will help them reach out to the other markets and sell their produce,” Prabhu said.The minister added that the industrial sector in Kolhapur is a growing sector. The industrial products can be easily exported once the cargo facility starts at Kolhapur airport. “This will boost their business,” he said.Steps are being taken to start night landing facility for Kolhapur airport and as parking lot for other aircrafts during night time. “Working on these facilities will help in generation of employment and provide jobs to a number of people in Kolhapur,” he said.The new terminal building will exhibit the speciality of Kolhapur and will have a heritage bear a mark of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. We will also set up a museum at airport that will exhibit the life and time of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, he said.
