Co-op banks still dry, farmers helpless

Thousands of farmers, who are members of the cooperative sugar mills and diaries, have been waiting for months to receive their payments. Kolhapur: The Kolhapur District Central Cooperative Bank (KDCCB) is still struggling to receive sufficient cash supply after more than two months of demonetisation. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not changed its norms for the cooperative banks since demonetisation.The bank is dependent on the cash supply from local currency chests of nationalised banks. "A large network of the cooperative sugar factories and diary cooperatives are linked to the KDCC. "Chavan added that they have made several requests to the apex bank regarding cash supply, but have not received any response.He added that the farmers bills are piling up.

Kolhapur: The Kolhapur District Central Cooperative Bank (KDCCB) is still struggling to receive sufficient cash supply after more than two months of demonetisation. The sugar cane and milk bills worth of Rs 596 crore are still stuck in bank as farmers and members are unable to withdraw cash.Cooperative banks, considered as the lifeline of rural economy, have been under the scanner of apex bank over suspicious transactions since the demonetisation. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not changed its norms for the cooperative banks since demonetisation.The bank is dependent on the cash supply from local currency chests of nationalised banks. The daily requirement of the KDCC bank is around Rs 55 crore, but it has received just around Rs 45 crore in the last two months.Chief executive officer of KDCC bank Pratapsingh Chavan said, "The bank is cashless even after the two months of demonetisation. We are not able to get cash from the apex bank. We have complied with all the norms asked by the RBI and National Bank for Agricultural And Rural Development (NABARD). But still we haven't received any relief from the government."Chavan added that they have made several requests to the apex bank regarding cash supply, but have not received any response.He added that the farmers bills are piling up. "Even the cash in old denomination is still with us. The bank is on the threshold of a complete collapse. The condition of bank is similar to that of a person starving. Farmers have complained that they are unable to repay loans and bear the expenses for the fertilisers and pesticides.Mahadev Savant, member of the local milk society in Wadicharan village in Shahuwadi, said they have an account in KDCC. The milk bills work of Rs 12 lakh are stuck in the bank. "We are not able to withdraw money from the bank owing to cash crunch. We are being paid minimal amount after ten days of filling up withdrawal slip. It has added to our worries," he said.
