The New Town area is all set to have a primary healthcare centre and a polyclinic where the people can see a doctor for check-ups and have basic tests done.

This has been an old demand of the people residing in the area where there are many super-specialty hospitals but very few facilities for testing and treating basic health issues. Work is yet to start on a government medical college and hospital.

New Town Kolkata Development Authority has planned the project that will have an OPD, testing clinic, and medicine shop and telemedicine facility. The polyclinic would be built by Hidco. The healthcare centre has plans to upgrade into a hospital later.

Tenders have been floated for both centers. The healthcare facility will have a three-storied building with floor plate of 3,200 sq. ft. each. It would be located near the City Centre II mall that has many residential complexes around it. The projected time for completing it is one and a half year.

The location has been earmarked near New Town Business Club. A Hidco official told the Times of India, “The plan will be to start with a polyclinic and healthcare centre and develop the facility into a multi-specialty hospital by sprucing up the infrastructure.”

A full-fledged government-run hospital with emergency and in-patient care facilities is the need of the hour at New Town. “The NKDA and Hidco’s initiatives are very much welcome,” said Subho Dasgupta, a resident.
