NIA special court in Kolkata jails Bangladeshi operative of Ansarullah Bangla Team

Kolkata, Feb 10 (PTI) A special NIA court here on Thursday jailed a Bangladeshi operative of the proscribed terrorist organisation Ansarullah Bangla Team for seven years and imposed a fine of Rs 16,000 for his involvement in a conspiracy to commit terrorist attacks in India, an official said. Samad Mia, 26, of Bangladesh"s Sylhet, was convicted under sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Foreigners Act, the official of the premier investigation agency said. The special NIA court Kolkata sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment of seven years and fined Rs 16,000, the official said. The case, initially registered by the STF Kolkata in November 2017, pertains to the arrest of five members of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), a proscribed terrorist organisation in Bangladesh, in Kolkata, the NIA official said. Four of the arrested members were Bangladeshi nationals while one was Indian, according to the official. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the investigation in March 2018 and established that Bangladeshi members of ABT had entered India in 2016 in pursuance of the conspiracy to commit terrorist acts in India, the official said. The accused had travelled and stayed at Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai in the guise of labourers and tried to procure chemicals from a shop in Patna, the NIA official said, adding that they also tried to procure arms and ammunition in Kolkata and establish hide-outs in Ranchi. After completion of investigation, all the five arrested accused were charge sheeted by the NIA. Earlier, three accused were convicted by the Special NIA Court, Kolkata.
