WB to recommend ex-judge Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya’s name as HRC chief

Kolkata, May 23 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that her government on Monday decided to recommend the name of former Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya as the chairman of the state Human Rights Commission (HRC), the post which has been lying vacant for quite some time. It was also decided that the name of another ex-judge, Madhumita Mitra, will be recommended as a member of the HRC. “The post of chairman of the Human Rights Commission has been lying vacant for a long time. As a result, a lot of files are lying unattended. It was decided at a meeting that former High Court Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya’s name will be recommended as the chairman of the commission," she said. Banerjee said that the names of former director-general of police, retired IPS officer Virendra, and retired IAS officer Naveen Prakash have been proposed as Information Commissioners. The CM said retired Calcutta High Court judge Asim Kumar Roy’s name will be recommended as the state’s Lokayukta. At the meeting to consider the Lokayukta’s name, members of the related committee – the chief minister, Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee and another minister Partha Chatterjee were present.Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who is also a member of the panel, skipped the meeting claiming "non-cooperation of state government".
