more-in Rescue squads led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Sunday recovered the body of one more victim from Karinchola, where five houses were buried under soil following a major landslide in the region last Thursday. The body of Asiya Hassan, 54, was recovered after a four-day search, taking the toll to 13. Fire and Rescue Services personnel said the search would be called off in the area after finding Nafeesa Abdurahiman, reportedly the last victim of the calamity. High-end searching devices, including land scanners, were brought to the spot on Sunday to support the rescue mission, they added. On Sunday, Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan visited the scene and reviewed rescue activities. He said the special relief package for the landslide victims would be announced by the Cabinet after holding discussions and studying the loss estimate. He also made it clear that legal action would be taken against the suspected illegal construction in the area on getting the Revenue squad’s investigation report. People’s representatives called for a comprehensive rehabilitation package for the victims’ families as it was the biggest incident in the district in the last 20 years. In the last two decades, 30 persons lost their lives in three major landslides. In the first incident in 2004, as many as 10 persons from two families at Nittukkottamala in the district were killed. The second incident was in Pulloorampara in 2012, and seven persons lost their lives. “Not less than 25 houses were partially damaged in Karinchola. Relief camps should be equipped with all facilities to ensure a comfortable stay for people till they got their houses repaired,” said M.K. Ragahavan, MP. In his request to the Chief Minister, Mr. Raghavan pointed out that the calamity was the biggest ever reported in the district in the last two decades, and that it should be attended with a better relief package. Meanwhile, various religious groups and non-governmental organisations have come up with voluntary rehabilitation support for the families hit by the calamity. Members of local bodies said there were offers to give land and houses for free to survivors. Relief camps too drew voluntary contributions from various organisations in the form of food and medicine, they added.
