more-in Medical professionals are planning an agitation against what they called the State government’s “attempt to destroy the health sector by producing hybrid doctors” by offering training for ayurveda and homoeo students in modern medicine. A meeting of the action council of doctors on Tuesday decided to hold July 20 as “anti-hybrid-doctors day”. Doctors and medical students would also stage a protest outside the government secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on July 25. Official slammed In a press release, Indian Medical Association (IMA) Kerala chapter alleged that the Government Order was hastily issued by the Health Secretary when the Health Minister was on a tour abroad. The IMA pointed out that the Kerala High Court had issued an order against such training programmes and the Medical Council of India (MCI), Travancore-Cochin Medical Council, and the Paramedical Council of India were opposed to it too. The MCI could cancel the licences of doctors who take part in such programmes. The training in gynaecology, surgery, and post-mortem examination at district government hospitals and government general hospitals may last between three and six months. Also, the IMA pointed out that allowing ayurveda and homoeo doctors to enter labour wards was an intrusion into the privacy of the patients and a violation of their human rights. The order claims that ayurveda and homoeo students should be allowed to “observe” activities in labour rooms for two or three days. With the certificate issued after the training programme, they might also start consultation and surgery later. The IMA alleged that efforts were also on to appoint them in primary health centres.
