Pranav, a Class 6 student of Upper Primary School, Vengeri, Kozhikode, was all tears on Wednesday when his teacher asked the class what all they had lost in the recent floods. C.V. Sheela, headmistress of the Chevarambalam Government Lower Primary School, was concerned about the loss of classes due to unexpected calamities such as the Nipah outbreak and the floods. Teachers pointed out that many students behaved as if they are coming to school after the summer vacation. He was among the hundreds of children in the school who have been affected by the floods. There is a proposal to give handloom uniforms for free to students in government LP schools if they have lost their uniforms.

Between sobs, he managed to say that his father, C. Pradeep Kumar, had been hospitalised after he suffered an injury on his hips while draining the floodwaters from their house. He was among the hundreds of children in the school who have been affected by the floods. There was no classes in schools in the district on Wednesday as teachers were seen trying their best to heal the mental trauma of flood-hit students. One of the parents of a student in Vengeri U.P. School was electrocuted while he was cleaning the house. There were many students in other schools who had tales about losing their personal belongings as wells as uniforms and study materials. Teachers pointed out that many students behaved as if they are coming to school after the summer vacation. Some of the students had to stay in the relief camps set up at their own schools. C.V. Sheela, headmistress of the Chevarambalam Government Lower Primary School, was concerned about the loss of classes due to unexpected calamities such as the Nipah outbreak and the floods. Cutting down interval timings might be an option, teachers felt. Meanwhile, the office of the Deputy Director of Education said that the textbook officer had been informed about the details of students who had lost their textbooks in the floods. There is a proposal to give handloom uniforms for free to students in government LP schools if they have lost their uniforms. Aided schools could be given funds to buy uniforms.
