The Zamorins then attacked the Chaliyam Fort, which was then under the Portuguese, to procure wood to renovate the Mishkal Mosque. For the record, the Zamorins have shared a close relationship with the Khazis of Mishkal Mosque for centuries and have always found time to visit the mosque on special occasions.

more-in KOZHIKODE: Eid-ul-Fitr in the city was marked by a historic event on Monday, with the Zamorin, K.C. Unnianujan Raja, paying a visit to the Mishkal Mosque. For the record, the Zamorins have shared a close relationship with the Khazis of Mishkal Mosque for centuries and have always found time to visit the mosque on special occasions. However, it was for the first time that the present Zamorin had visited the mosque. History The association of the Zamorins with the Mishkal Mosque dates back to AD 1510 when a Portuguese naval force attacked Kuttichira where the mosque is located. The Nair warriors of the Zamorin had then joined forces with Muslims in the region to defend Kuttichira. The attack caused serious damage to the mosque. The Zamorins then attacked the Chaliyam Fort, which was then under the Portuguese, to procure wood to renovate the Mishkal Mosque. Unnianujan Raja’s visit to the mosque on Monday was in memory of nearly 700 years of friendship. Chief Khazi K.V. Imbichammad Haji received the Zamorin along with mosque committee president K.V. Kunhahammad, secretary N. Ummer, and Khazi Foundation chairman P.V. Usman Koya. Attends feast The Khazi and the Zamorin interacted for almost an hour at the mosque before attending a feast at the Khazi’s office. The Zamorin also spent time with the local people. He was accompanied by his secretary Rama Varma.
