more-in KOZHIKODE: The government will devise a mechanism involving the public to curb substance abuse in schools and colleges, Education Minister C. Ravindranath has said. Speaking at a sitting of the subject committee of the Kerala Assembly on education here on Saturday, he said reining in the use of alcohol and drugs among students was one of the objectives of the Save Public Education campaign undertaken by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Mr. Ravindranath said the coordination of the departments of Local Self-Governance, Health, Social Justice, Police, Education and Excise was the need of the hour. The priority was to stop the availability of drugs and alcohol around the premises of educational institutions. Relevant laws would be amended, if required, for the purpose. Awareness programmes would be held for parents and students and a special module would be prepared in a month. The State Council for Educational Research and Training had begun a study to find out if it was possible to include the campaign against substance abuse in the school syllabus. The meeting here was the second of the three meetings being held by the committee to collect opinion from the people. The participants were from Kozhikode and Wayanad districts.
