more-in The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation has decided to seek a detailed project report (DPR) to set up a modern slaughterhouse at Kothi despite strong protest from the Opposition at the council meeting on Tuesday. The Health Officer had pointed out that the project proposal submitted by the Kerala Veterinary University for the slaughterhouse was inadequate, and so a new DPR should be made. The matter was brought before the council for approval. However, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) councillor C. Abdurahman pointed out that the 1.15 acres of land acquired at Kothi for the purpose was not enough to accommodate a slaughterhouse that would cater to the needs of the whole city. “The proposed slaughterhouse can handle only 100 animals a day, and will cater to only a small section of the city. We need a facility that can handle more than 1,000 cattle,” he said while drawing attention towards the public protest at Kothi and the apprehensions of the people there. However, Mayor Thottathil Raveendran and Health Standing Committee chairman K.V. Baburaj refused to accept the demand to set up the slaughterhouse elsewhere as there was an urgent need to start the proceedings following a recent Supreme Court order. “The land was acquired for the slaughterhouse. It cannot be used for anything else. There is no basis to the apprehensions of the public as it would be a state-of-the-art facility,” Mr. Baburaj said. Adjournment motion Earlier, the council passed an adjournment motion demanding action against the people who attacked the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The Opposition expressed discontent over the rejection of two other motions - one proposed by Congress councillor P.M. Suresh Babu alleging that the State government was not taking any action to address the ‘financial instability caused by the implementation of Goods and Services Tax’ and the one proposed by BJP councillor Nambidi Narayanan saying that BJP workers were being wrongfully targeted for the incident involving the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram. The Mayor said that what happened in Thiruvananthapuram was an insult to democracy and should not be repeated. There were some arguments about the pathetic condition of streetlights. The Mayor said that all lights would soon be converted into LED lights. The council decided to express its discontent about the discontinuation of the local news by All India Radio in Kozhikode, saying that it is an act of neglect towards the Malabar region.
