Its purpose would be to ensure that e-POS machines use only a prescribed network operator. LUCKNOW: After a multi-crore scam hit the public distribution system (PDS) in the state, the UP government has decided to roll out a GPSenabled geo-fencing embedding on e-POS machines that control authorisation and distribution of foodgrains. The POS will then transmit this RC number to the fair price shop software, which will authenticate it and return the household details, including Aadhaar and mobile number of beneficiaries. Then four-point triggers — finger print, Aadhaar, iris-based scan and one-time password authentication on mobile number — would be generated,” said the government checklist. The government has also decided to conduct a mobile footprint survey. LUCKNOW: After a multi-crore scam hit the public distribution system (PDS) in the state, the UP government has decided to roll out a GPSenabled geo-fencing embedding on e-POS machines that control authorisation and distribution of foodgrains. Geo-fencing allows for setting up of triggers when a GPS-enabled device enters or exits the boundaries defined by the administrator.TOI had recently reported that about 1.86 lakh illegal transactions, involving 2.2 lakh tonnes of grains, were carried out by impostors by replacing Aadhaar numbers of original PDS beneficiaries. An internal probe last month had found that nearly 2.2 lakh tonnes of wheat and rice were siphoned off in July from fair price shops while the UP Police was still trying to ascertain the mastermind even after arresting seven people from Noida and Lucknow. The state government has now decided to make iris scan mandatory in rural areas where illiteracy and connivance of officials may hinder running of Aadhaar-based schemes.“We had recently sent a team to Telangana where we found that they were using a geo-fencing software system for transporters, who ferry foodgrains from godowns to fair price shops. This was being done to ensure that a transporter does not change his route. Similarly, Aadhaar-enabled e-POS machines will now be under 24x7 surveillance,” said UP food commissioner Alok Kumar. The state government had made iris-supported e-POS machines part of the tendering process for companies which bid for managing the software to run the PDS system.First, e-POS will scan the bar code on the ration card (RC). The POS will then transmit this RC number to the fair price shop software, which will authenticate it and return the household details, including Aadhaar and mobile number of beneficiaries. This will be stored in the temporary memory on the POS. Then four-point triggers — finger print, Aadhaar, iris-based scan and one-time password authentication on mobile number — would be generated,” said the government checklist. The government has also decided to conduct a mobile footprint survey. Its purpose would be to ensure that e-POS machines use only a prescribed network operator.
