Allahabad: Thousands bid farewell to Goddess

ALLAHABAD: After four days of worshipping goddess Durga , different barwaris of the Sangam city along with various durga puja samitis immersed the idol of the deity, on Friday last. Young boys and girls along with seniors of the family were seen dancing to the hit numbers.Over 400 small and big idols of the goddess Durga were immersed in the makeshift pond. Long queues of trucks were seen on the Triveni marg (the road meant for coming for immersion) and Kali marg, meant for returning. Emotionally-charged chants of "bolo joi durga mai ki” reverberated across the calm riverbed amid adequate security arrangements by the local police and volunteers of civil defence.Thousands of idols were also immersed in hundreds of ponds in the rural areas of the district.The event passed off peacefully under the watchful eyes of the district administration. Sprinkling Gulal on each other and dancing to the tune of Dhaki and Nagada (drum), different barwaris and samitis reached the immersion site.From wacky themes to the traditional ones, city's Durga Puja idols this year were designed with pearls, pulses, leaves while the idols of the mother goddess ranged from the conventional clay ones to even those decorated with other items.

Thousands of devotees reached the Sangam bank and bid farewell to goddess Durga by immersing the idols in the temporary pond made by the civil administration of Allahabad.Following the practice of the previous years, the district administration had constructed a huge temporary pond near Ganga on the Sangam bank wherein the idols of Durga and the other deities were immersed.Since early Tuesday evening, all roads leading to this makeshift pond were choked with immersion processions as hundreds of trucks reached the site along with the revellers.
