Traffic woes fail to dampen festive zeal

LUCKNOW: Despite numerous complaints of severe traffic jams across the city in the last few days, police failed to come up with any plan or measures to ensure easy shopping for people flocking to markets on Monday. Instead of any improvement, the traffic scene deteriorated further in city.Police management was so poor that some vendors had put up makeshift shops in the middle of the road in Gole Market City roads witnessed heavy traffic jams and congestion all through the day with no control whatsoever on irregular parking and encroachments.Almost all markets including Hazratganj , Gole Market, Kapoorthala, Bhootnath, Telibagh, Alambagh , Purania, Chowk, Hussainganj, Udaiganj, Sadar, Patrakarpuram saw long queues of vehicles at noon and in evening.However, the traffic mess could not kill the enthusiasm of shoppers. Angad Sinha, a bank employee, who had come with his 3-year old son to shop for Dhanteras in Narhi market parked his bike far away and walked on foot.Sunidhi Saxena, a housewife, who had come to Bhootnath market said that vendors haven't left space to walk for pedestrians.In Gole Market, vendors put up shops in the middle of the road. " Car kahan se nikalein. Kinare to laga hi rakhi hain dukan, yahan toh road ke beech me bhi hai. Police seem to be sleeping. It's pathetic situation," said Raghuveer, a medicine shop owner."I wanted to take a U-turn at Hussainganj crossing after having gone to neighbourhood vegetable market but got stuck for 30 minutes. Everyone knows there will be rush on festivals, proper arrangements should have been made to manage traffic," said Ramesh Singh, a government employee.Ram Vishnoi's car was stuck while shopping with his wife and son in Chowk market. "It is suffocating due to pollution, dust and vehicular exhaust. My son is already suffering from cough. I have not been able to move my car for 20 minutes," he said."Udaiganj is completely blocked. It took me over 30 minutes to reach Burlington," said Akash Singh who had come to Sadar market.
