Passenger arrested for attempt to smuggle 4kg gold concealed in iron

LUCKNOW: Concealing it inside an iron, a man in his 30s tried to smuggle in 4.6kg gold worth Rs 1.5 crore from Dubai.He was arrested at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport on Saturday after customs offcials spotted him.This is the biggest recovery of gold at the airport in two years, said an official.The accused, Shambhu Chauhan, tried to outsmart security officials by evading checks initially but was apprehended by sleuths of customs on the basis of a tip-off. Chauhan had landed on an Air India Express flight at noon."During scanning of Chauhan's bags, an iron press was recovered. We took it out for examination and it was found to be overweight, raising suspicion. When we opened it, we found gold weighing 4.6kg in the shape of the filament," said deputy commissioner customs, Niharika Lakha.Chauhan, a native of Deoria district, was working as a labourer in Dubai. He has been booked under Customs Act, 1962, said an official.Officials added that big smugglers in places like Dubai search for needy people and give them free ticket to fly to their hometowns. In return, they use them as carriers in smuggling of gold.Last week, sleuths of customs had recovered 790gram of gold costing Rs 26.5 lakh from the sole of shoes worn by one Rehman Khan.
