Uttar Pradesh: Arms smuggler held in Allahabad

ALLAHABAD: Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a key arms smuggler, Ashish Kumar Mishra, on the charges of supplying illegal weapons bought from Munger (Bihar) to criminal gangs in eastern UP districts, including Allahabad and Pratapgarh.The police have also seized two country-made pistols of .315 bore and live cartridges from his possession.Acting upon a tip off, a police team led by inspector (Maheshganj) SK Pandey cordoned off the Azad Nagar canal bridge road and managed to catch the key racketeer. The inspector said that Ashish along with his accomplice identified as Sachin Mishra had brought two consignments of illegal weapons — six pistols and two country-made pistols of .315 bore — from Munger and sold them out to criminals of eastern UP districts.The racketeer confessed that a pistol is sold for Rs 20,000 and they had a wide network.Following the information provided by the arrested racketeer, Allahabad and Pratapgarh police are zeroing on three criminals — Raja Pandey and Amit Upadhaya of Pratapgarh and Mahendra Bahadur of Allahabad — who had purchased weapons from the accused.Police said that as many as four criminal cases were pending against Ashish Kumar Mishra in different police stations of the state.
