LUCKNOW: Rashtriya Lok Dal vice-president Jayant Chaudhary met SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday, triggering fresh speculations of the Jat-dominated outfit being a part of SP-BSP combine. The RLD also wanted to contest the Muzaffarnagar Lok Sabha seat which was won by Muzaffarnagar riot accused Sanjeev Baliyan of BJP in 2014. This is the second time that Jayant met Akhilesh within a week even as SP and BSP forged an alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. While Jayant maintained that his talks with Akhilesh were ‘cordial’ vis-a-vis seat sharing arrangement, sources close to him said that the RLD has confined itself to negotiations with SP only. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Jayant said “the meeting was not about me or him, but us.”The SP-BSP combine had agreed to contest on 38 seats each while leaving two for one or two allies and not fielding candidates in Amethi and Rae Bareli, the Congress strongholds.Sources privy to the meeting between Akhilesh and Jayant said that RLD wanted to contest on three Jat-dominated seats, including Muzaffarnagar, Mathura and Baghpat Jayant had contested from Mathura in 2014 but lost to BJP’s Hema Malini, while his father and RLD chief Ajit Singh contested from Baghpat and lost to BJP’s Satya Pal Singh. Sources said that Jayant was negotiating for a fourth seat as well.Political circles have been rife about RLD seeking six seats from SP even while the Ajit Singh-led party initiating back channels talks with Congress. But with Congress announcing that it plans to contest all 80 seats in UP, political analysts said that SP could once again work on the ‘Kairana model’ where it allowed its candidate Tabassum Begam to contest on RLD ticket.RLD has been seeking its resurrection since it lost all the seats in contested in 2014 and was trounced by BJP in its stronghold of west UP which has a sizeable population of Jats, Dalits and Muslims.
