Pandey is one of the few officers, who is not tagged to a particular political party.Pandey’s contribution in fetching investments, inking MoUs of over Rs 4.28 lakh crore and his periodical ground-breaking ceremonies of projects are a feather in his cap. UP chief secretary Anup Chandra Pandey has been given an extension of a record six months, something unprecedented in the state bureaucracy.CM Yogi Adityanath’s unwavering faith on Pandey stems from his non-controversial image and his clockwork efficiency.Earlier, former chief secretary Alok Ranjan was given an extension of three months only. With this, he has won the race for the hot seat, outpacing at least three officers from Lucknow and Delhi, who were lobbying for the chair at RSS headquarters.Pandey, a Brahmin officer, also balances caste equations in the government and this suits the Yogi government well in run-up to elections. The 1984 batch officer, who has a vast experience in Lucknow and also in Delhi during deputation, enjoys a clean image, despite working with different political regimes, including SP and BSP. Also, his personal monitoring of Rs 5000-crore Kumbh projects in Allahabad and his deft coordination with the Centre on flagship schemes, programmes and projects of Modi government, weighed in his favour.Sources in CM office told TOI that once the state government’s proposal for extension was dispatched to PMO, as he was set to retire on February 28, Narendra Modi’s office didn’t lose time in responding within 24 hours.Contrary to this, when the chief minister sent a proposal for appointment of O P Singh as DGP last year, PMO had held up the file for nearly a month and cleared very reluctantly.
