KGMU staff thrash cancer patientrsquos attendant

LUCKNOW:During his visit to KGMU on Thursday, state medical education minister Ashutosh Tandon appealed to its doctors and staff to remain cordial with patients and their attendants.But his appeal did not last even for an hour. Minutes after Tandon left the campus, three contractual employees of the medical university allegedly thrashed a patient’s attendants in the new out patient department ( OPD ).A video of the incident went viral on social media within hours, forcing KGMU administration to suspended the accused staff.

KGMU proctor also informed Chowk police for action to be taken against the accused.An elderly woman, who is suffering from cancer, used the staff toilet in the OPD block. As tempers soared, the trio pushed and slapped the woman’s son in the presence of several people.After the video went viral, the chief proctor asked the in-charge of new OPD block to identify the accused employees. The accused were identified as contractual employees working as computer operators at the OPD’s registration counters.In his address at KGMU, Tandon mentioned a recent incident where a doctor had allegedly denied admission to a patient in trauma centre after an argument with the patient’s attendant. “It’s important that doctors and staff at KGMU behave decently with patients and their families as they come here in a difficult situation. They look up to doctors as gods and hence the latter need to be patient with them,” the minister said.KGMU administration has directed the company that had hired the trio to immediately suspend them and provide their replacements.The company has also been told to ensure that trio is not posted at any position at KGMU in the future.
