UP: 8 women, 2 children killed as tractor-trolley falls into pond; 37 injured

Lucknow, Sep 26 (PTI) Ten people were killed while 37 were injured when the tractor-trolley in which they were travelling overturned and fell into a pond here on Monday, a senior district official said.Forty-seven people were travelling in the vehicle which was on its way to a Durga Devi temple in Unnaee village for a "mundan" ceremony, District Magistrate (Lucknow) Surya Pal Gangwar said.Eight women and two children were killed in the accident, he said.Superintendent of Police (Lucknow rural) Hirdesh Kumar said, "The deceased have been identified as Ketki Devi (55), Annpurna (40), Malti (40), Bihi (14), Anshika (13), Sunita (36), Ruchi Maurya, Sukhrani, Sushma Maurya and Komal." An ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each is being extended to the family of the deceased.A person with serious injuries has been admitted to the King George"s Medical University (KGMU) hospital, while others undergoing treatment in the Community Health Centre in Itaunja are said to be out of danger, Gangwar said.The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team which was called to assist the search operations is still present at the spot to ensure that nobody is trapped in the pond, he said. President Droupadi Murmu condoled the loss of lives in the accident. "The news of death of women and some girls in Lucknow is painful. In this hour of grief, I express my deep condolence to the families of the bereaved, and pray for speedy recovery of the injured," she said in a tweet in Hindi. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed grief over the loss of lives, and prayed for speedy recovery of the injured. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the family members of each of the deceased will be provided a financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh.Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak visited the community health centre in Itaunja, and enquired about the well-being of the injured persons.In a tweet in Hindi, Pathak said, "Met the people injured in the accident on Itaunja-Kumhrawan road, at the community health centre in Itaunja, and enquired about their well-being. The doctors were directed to provide high quality medical treatment, and provide all possible help." The district magistrate (DM) said investigations are on to find out the reasons behind the accident and feedback is also being taken from the eyewitnesses.Police and administration are on alert to ensure that large number of people do not travel, especially on narrow roads, as this increases the risk of accidents, he said.Gangwar along with senior district and police officials had rushed to the spot and instructed the officials concerned to ensure all possible help to the victims.He also met the victims admitted in the CHC Itaunja and enquired about their condition.
