‘UP has zero tolerance for crime’

Lucknow: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has stated that the government has a zero-tolerance policy towards crime and criminals. In line with this policy, 190 hardened criminals were killed in police encounters in various districts between March 2017 and September 2023. Additionally, 5,191 criminals were injured in these encounters. While displaying bravery, 16 police personnel were martyred and 1,478 were injured in the line of duty. To tighten the noose against criminals in the state, action was taken against 69,332 accused under the Gangsters Act and 887 accused under the National Security Act (NSA). A total of 58 people, including 20 mafia members and their 38 co-criminals, were sentenced to life imprisonment with fines. Two of these individuals were also given the death sentence. In addition, property worth Rs 3,650 crore acquired through the illegal activities of gang members was confiscated. The court ordered the Passport Authority to review the petitioners claim for a passport within six weeks, considering relevant decisions from the apex court and the high court. The petitioner had requested the court to overturn the rejection of their application by the Passport Seva Kendra, citing previous judgments that established the passport cannot be denied based on a criminal case.
