Two doctors arrested for giving away newborn to kin

Lucknow: Two doctors, one of them owner of a private hospital, were arrested in Balrampur on Wednesday for allegedly giving away a newborn baby to one of their relatives after informing the biological mother that she had delivered a stillborn baby.The delivery was done on October 29 after which the doctors claimed that the baby could not survive. However, the family grew suspicious when the doctors did not hand over the baby despite repeated requests.On Tuesday (November 28), the victim, Pushpa Devi (28), was informed by a local woman that she had given birth to a healthy child but two doctors, Akram Jamal (40) and Hafiz Rehman (50), handed over the baby to their relative, Nasir, a local corporator from Siddharthnagar district.After the family lodged an FIR, the police arrested Akram (owner of the hospital) and Hafiz and recovered the baby from Nasirs house. The arrest came after the dismantling of a sex-determination and female foeticide racket in Mandya, where two suspects, Shivalinge Gowda and Nayan Kumar, were apprehended while transporting a pregnant woman for an abortion in a car. Investigations are ongoing to arrest others involved in the racket. A jaggery unit in Mandya, functioning as an unauthorized ultrasound scan center, was also discovered by the police.
