Nine more airports to come up in UP in next two years: Jyotiraditya Scindia

NEW DELHI: Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia declared plans on Monday for the construction of nine new airports in Uttar Pradesh within the next two years. Responding to additional queries during the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Scindia emphasized the significant priority that the government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is assigning to the civil aviation sector.He mentioned that in the initial 65 years of independence, only 74 airports were built.However, in the last nine years of the Modi government, 75 airports have been developed, bringing the total to 149, including airports, heliports, and waterdromes.The Civil Aviation Minister mentioned that a mere three greenfield airports were built in 65 years, whereas the current government has developed 12 greenfield airports since 2014.Scindia noted that six airports were developed in Uttar Pradesh over the course of 65 years. The minister further stated that three additional airports have been constructed in the state in the last nine years.Scindia stated, "We are set to build nine additional airports in Uttar Pradesh over the next two years," mentioning that the overall count would then reach 18. In response to a question about the Meerut airport, the minister explained that operations with ATR aircraft, utilizing Visual Flight Rating (VFR), can commence once the state government provides an additional 115 acres of land."Meerut is an unlicensed airport, identified during the third round of bidding under the UDAN scheme for development and operation of RCS flights," stated Scindia in a written response.In the UDAN 4.2 round of bidding, FlyBig has been awarded the Meerut-Lucknow-Meerut route for the operation of RCS flights. The service involves a 19-seater type of aircraft with a frequency of 133 seats per week, and it is not designated for ATR 72 aircraft. "Only after the airport is ready and licensed, the Selected Airlines Operator can start operating RCS flights from the Meerut airport," he added.(With inputs from Agency)
