A shocking incident rocked Ballia as authorities apprehended a man who killed and mutilated a cobra, sparking outrage among citizens and animal rights activists alike. The arrest followed a vigilant citizens report and the circulation of a distressing video capturing the heinous act, which quickly garnered attention online. In a swift response to the incident, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India collaborated with Ballia police and the Uttar Pradesh Forest department to take immediate action upon receiving the report. This joint effort resulted in the registration of an FIR against the accused, who has since been taken into custody by authorities. Cobras, revered as sacred in Indian culture, are protected under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act (WPA), 1972. The FIR has been registered under sections 9 and 51 of the WPA, 1972, underscoring the gravity of the offence. These sections mandate non-bailable charges and carry stringent penalties, including imprisonment ranging from three to seven years, coupled with a minimum fine of Rs 25,000. Sunayana Basu, PETA Indias cruelty response coordinator, expressed dismay over the incident and condemned the brutal treatment inflicted upon the defenceless cobra. Basu stressed the urgent need for swift and decisive action against animal cruelty, commending the Uttar Pradesh Forest department and Dr Bonik Chandra Brahma, Chief Conservator of Forests, Eastern Zone, for their proactive response. Furthermore, Basu urged the public to promptly report any encounters with wildlife to the Forest department, underlining the significance of respecting and safeguarding all forms of life.
