Railways create Whatsapp group to monitor cleanliness at stations and on-board

LUCKNOW: Whatsapp comes handy for railways in keeping its trains and stations clean. Lucknow division of Northern Railway (NR) has taken to Whatsapp like never before to act against poor cleanliness profile of its railway stations.With at least 25 Whatsapp groups in existence to monitor the level of cleanliness at 25-odd stations, the division has also created an exclusive group for its train with maximum complaint, Delhi-Pratapgarh via Lucknow Padmavat express."Train has old coaches and there were many complaints about the train. We were not able to do away with all of them during our routine maintenance of the train. Having created a Whatsapp group has helped. Number of complaints have reduced," said divisional railway manager (DRM), NR, Lucknow, Satish Kumar.The train's pantry, toilets, coaches and passages are monitored through the group. Photos are scanned by senior officers of the division including DRM."In case of any laxity, the explanation is sought instantly," said the official. Given the group, train's AC has started functioning properly and now sleeper coaches are next on the target.Apart from this, separate Whatsapp groups have been created for all railway stations on Lucknow-Kanpur route and a group each for Varanasi, Barabanki, Rae-bareli, Faizabad, Ayodhya, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Bhadohi, Janghai and other stations.Officers from Engineering, commercial, operations and other departments are on the group. If it is an overflowing or choked drain it is looked after by engineering department whereas ticket checking drive is being conducted by commercial deparment if the need be.Northern Railways' Charbagh station was put on 57th position in cleanliness rankings in May based on the cleanliness survey done at 75 A-1 category stations by Indian Railways under 'Swachh Rail Swachh Bharat' campaign.Choked toilets and overflowing sewage were responsible for the poor show. "We had created the groups before the survey," said the DRM.
