LUCKNOW: At a time when Lucknow is already facing a daily shortage of about 130 million litres — which is almost 22% of the total daily demand — government departments like LMC Jal Sansthan , Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation ( LMRC ) and fire police have decided to sprinkle groundwater in the most polluted localities of the city to clear the smog More than one lakh litre of groundwater is being drawn daily to provide relief from pollution. This is despite the fact that Lucknow has been facing severe dip in the groundwater level for the past many years. Water is even being drawn from those localities which are worst-hit by the depleting groundwater level, like Aliganj and Alambagh.The alarming rise in pollution made the departments take a collective call to deploy tankers and sprinkle water around the city. While the LMC has deployed three tankers with capacity ranging from 5,000 to 9,000 litre to sprinkle water, Jal Sansthan has put five tankers of 4,500 litre each on the job. These are mostly drawing water from tube-wells (groundwater) and from Aishbagh waterworks (surface water).What's worse, the tankers draw water 2-3 times to be able to make several rounds in a day. LMC has announced a special roster to sprinkle water between 9-11pm. While LMRC has been sprinkling water on its construction site, fire police has put to use six tankers.LMC in charge said, "There is no other way to clear the smog. In winters, water demand is less while the discharge from tubewells also increases. The roster will continue for the next 15-20 days."
