Cyber fraudsters dupe stationery manufacturing company of Rs 13 lakh in Mumbai

MUMBAI: A stationery manufacturing company was defrauded of Rs 13 lakh in what is suspected to be a case of spear phishing . Later when he came across the CEO, Agarwal informed him of the bank transfer. The mail instructed Agarwal to transfer a sum of Rs 13.22 lakh from the company's bank account to an account with another private bank. An FIR was lodged on March 20.The police double checked and found that the CEO hadn't written the email. The CEO however said that he had sent no such email," said a police officer.

MUMBAI: A stationery manufacturing company was defrauded of Rs 13 lakh in what is suspected to be a case of spear phishing . An employee of the company, having its corporate headquarters at Goregaon East , has lodged a complaint with the Vanrai police.On March 15, the complainant, Navneet Agarwal , 40, received an email purportedly from the CEO of the company. The mail instructed Agarwal to transfer a sum of Rs 13.22 lakh from the company's bank account to an account with another private bank. "Agarwal did as instructed between 10.17am and 3.30pm. Later when he came across the CEO, Agarwal informed him of the bank transfer. The CEO however said that he had sent no such email," said a police officer. An FIR was lodged on March 20.The police double checked and found that the CEO hadn't written the email. Investigators are now trying to figure out if the mail was sent by someone who had hacked the CEO's email or was aware of his password. The possibility of email spoofing is also being looked into.
