There is no sign that the MRI section of Nair Hospital will start soon. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now decided to upgrade the MRI machine in Nair Hospital, which has been un-operational for the past three months. The estimated cost for it is Rs 8 crore, but the hospital is negotiating with the contractor. The hospital had initially decided to repair the machine, which would cost Rs 56 lakh. However, looking at the depreciation of the machine, the civic body has decided to upgrade it. The machine has been un-operational since December, when Rajesh Maru (32), a relative of a patient, was sucked in the MRI machine in the hospital. The hospital, which used to conduct 35 MRIs per day, is now transferring patients to peripheral civil hospitals. The hospital is also checking with non-government organisations that will conduct MRIs for Nair hospital patients, a senior official told DNA. "The upgradation proposal has already received administrative approval and will soon be sent to BMC's standing committee for approval. After that the upgradation work will take 5 months. The upgradation has digital process, which will save time of MRI scanning by 10 minutes. Thus, we conduct more MRIs in a day," the officer added. On the other hand, the investigation report of the MRI death case is yet to be submitted to the Municipal Commissioner. The report will tell to what extent the hospital authorities, including the doctors, are responsible for the mishap, how was the deceased allowed to enter the MRI room with an oxygen cylinder, and the actions that should be taken against the accused, etc. MONEY MATTERS
