A 44-year-old complainant from Koparkhairane was shocked when police officers from Navi Mumbai demanded proof of the theft allegedly committed by a house help from the society. The Koparkhairane police had registered a case of theft in March after gold ornaments went missing from the complainant's residence. Dr Sudhakar Pathak, a resident of Shiv Parvati Co-operative Housing Society in Sector 17 of Koparkhairane, reported a case of theft at his residence on March 19. Pathak's wife, Arti, was at the residence when a house help named Anita Kalra allegedly decamped with the gold ornaments worth Rs 2,35,000. The family members scrutinised the CCTV camera footage of the locality and the building. "When we approached the police to know about the investigations, they asked us to submit the CCTV camera footage as proof. They failed to investigate the case and the accused managed to secure bail. We are still struggling to get back the gold ornaments," said Dr Pathak. "The ornaments were worth at least Rs 6 to 7 lakh but the police only documented it to be of Rs 2.35 lakh and also mentioned the date of theft wrongly. We are in trauma and can not believe that complainants are being treated in such a bad way," added Dr Pathak. Shivaji Awate, Senior Inspector, Koparkhairane police station, said, "We made the arrest in the case and asked the complainant to check the CCTV camera footage. We have appointed a new investigation officer in the case."
