MUMBAI: Two contract workers of the BMC have been arrested for allegedly extorting Rs 400 from a pedestrian for "spitting" in public.The two-Mangesh Shinde (44) and Jitendra Shinde (45)-had cornered the pedestrian, Ajantkumar Gupta (25), as he was passing along the footpath near Mahalaxmi bridge for "spitting on the pavement". The two were arrested on Friday and have been charged with extortion. As Gupta refuted the allegation, the two insisted that he pay up a penalty of Rs 400, failing which they threatened to hand him over to the police, says a police complaint lodged by Gupta.Gupta, a Mira Road resident, said that he paid the penalty, fearing trouble.
