Ransom call helps police nab HDFC V-P murder accused

Police found that the SIM card had been removed from the handset after the call and another SIM had been inserted. A ransom call made by Sarfraz Sheikh, accused of murdering HDFC bank official Siddharth Sanghvi last week, led the police to him on Sunday evening. Using the location and the registration details of the SIM card, Navi Mumbai police picked up Sheikh from his residence. SIM removedSources said Sanghvi’s father immediately informed the police who started tracking the cell phone’s location. “A scuffle ensued and Sheikh ended up stabbing Sanghvi.”On September 8, Sheikh called the victim’s father using Sanghvi’s cell phone to give the impression that Sanghvi was alive.

Sheikh, 22, a fabricator, worked in the parking lot of the building in which Sanghvi’s office is located. The police said Sheikh was desperate for money, as he was falling behind on instalments for a new motorbike he had recently bought. “On September 5, Sheikh tried to rob Sanghvi at knifepoint as he was getting into his car after work,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Abhinash Kumar. “A scuffle ensued and Sheikh ended up stabbing Sanghvi.” On September 8, Sheikh called the victim’s father using Sanghvi’s cell phone to give the impression that Sanghvi was alive. He told him to wait for his next call. SIM removed Sources said Sanghvi’s father immediately informed the police who started tracking the cell phone’s location. Sanghvi, a vice-president with the HDFC Bank in the Kamala Mills compound in Lower Parel, went missing on September 5 this year.
