Maid held for gold theft at employer's house

MUMBAI: A 40-year-old maid was arrested by the Dindoshi police for stealing a box of gold jewellery, worth Rs 4.5 lakh, from her employer's apartment . In the meanwhile, Shrotri's wife took ill. We told Sodha about her employer's illness and quizzed her about the stolen ornaments. "A box containing 225 gms of gold jewellery, belonging to his wife, was kept in the couple's cupboard. The last time they saw the box was on July 23 when Shrotri's wife wore the ornaments at an event. Geeta Sodha, the accused, was among six staffers employed by the complainant, Mukul Shrotri.

The police had to use tact to elicit information out of her as she appeared to be disturbed.Shrotri (43), his wife and mother live in Malad East. He runs two showrooms of heavy motorcycles at Jogeshwari and Kandivali. "A box containing 225 gms of gold jewellery, belonging to his wife, was kept in the couple's cupboard. The last time they saw the box was on July 23 when Shrotri's wife wore the ornaments at an event. Last week, she decided to wear them for Ganeshotsav. But the box was nowhere to be found in the cupboard," said a police officer. Shrotri then approached the police and lodged a complaint.The couple had employed four house helps, who worked in two shifts, besides two cooks. The police interrogated all six. They found that the cooks had no access to the bedroom cupboard. "We narrowed down our list of suspects to two women. One of them (Sodha) was estranged from her husband and lived alone at Nala Sopara. In the meanwhile, Shrotri's wife took ill. We told Sodha about her employer's illness and quizzed her about the stolen ornaments. She admitted to have stolen the box. The ornaments had been sold off to a jeweller. We recovered all of ornaments from him," said a police officer.Sodha has no past crime record. She was produced before a magistrate court on Monday.
