Maharashtra: Deadline for submitting caste certificates extended by 6 months

The burden of cases pending with the caste verification committees all over the state has forced the State Cabinet to extend the deadline for submitting caste verification certificates by another six months. The state government said due to the large amount of cases pending with the caste verification committees, many candidates did not receive their caste certificates even after being elected to power, inviting court cases against them. On Tuesday, the Cabinet increased the deadline for submission further, making it a total of 12 months. The candidates contesting elections to the local bodies including municipal corporations, municipal councils, gram panchayats are required to submit their caste certificate along with nomination papers. The decision would benefit all candidates contesting local body elections, especially from reserved categories.

The decision would benefit all candidates contesting local body elections, especially from reserved categories. On Tuesday, the Cabinet increased the deadline for submission further, making it a total of 12 months. The candidates contesting elections to the local bodies including municipal corporations, municipal councils, gram panchayats are required to submit their caste certificate along with nomination papers. The state government said due to the large amount of cases pending with the caste verification committees, many candidates did not receive their caste certificates even after being elected to power, inviting court cases against them. The Cabinet further decided to request the Governor to bring out an ordinance in this regard so that amendments in concerned rules can be made effective.
