After more than two years, the State government on Tuesday filled the vacant post of the head of the Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) by appointing Director General Sanjay Barve to the post. He took charge of his new position on Tuesday afternoon. The post had been vacant since July 2016 when Director General of Police Satish Mathur was appointed to head the Maharashtra Police. Despite DG Rakesh Maria, who was transferred as Commissioner of Police to the Home Guards, being eligible for the post, it remained vacant. Mr. Maria retired as DG, Home Guards in February 2017. Mr. Barve was heading the Maharashtra State Security Corporation and held additional charge as head of the State Intelligence Department. Mr. Barve said, “I have worked in the ACB before as ADG when Mr. Praveen Dixit was heading the agency. So this is not exactly a new turf for me.” Mr. Dixit was transferred as DGP Maharashtra and retired in 2016. When asked about what his priorities and initiatives would be as the new ACB chief, Mr. Barve said that it was too early for him to answer. An Indian Police Service officer of the 1987 batch, Mr. Barve has served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Economic Offences Wing) and Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Mumbai before being transferred as the Director of the Maharashtra Police Academy (MPA) in Nashik. While heading the MPA, he had written to the office of the DGP, Maharashtra, asking that only officers who actually have an interest in training recruits be posted at the academy. He was against frustrated officers biding time till their retirement and being detrimental to the interest of the academy and the police force. He was later appointed in Mumbai as Additional Director General of Police, Railways, before being promoted to the DG last year.
