This was the last of the 17 TBMs, which will be used to complete the 33.5 km Metro 3 corridor, to be lowered. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) reached a major milestone on Monday as it lowered the tunnel boring machine (TBM) Tansa 2 at the Science Museum station. “Tunnelling work is progressing satisfactorily, and with the last of the 17 TBMs in the underbelly of the city, we will work with more enthusiasm,” S.K. The TBM will begin its initial drive in the second week of November and dig 2.1 km from the Science Museum to Worli. Gupta, director (projects), MMRC, said. The underground corridor will have 53.87 km of tunnels, of which 10.4 km have been built as of now. On September 24, the MMRC achieved its first breakthrough after Vainganga 1 completed a 1.26-km tunnel from the Pali launching site at Marol Naka to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2 station. The first TBM, lowered nearly a year ago at Naya Nagar in Mahim, has since dug a little over 2 km. The TBMs have been named after rivers in Maharashtra. The corridor will connect Cuffe Parade to SEEPZ and will have 26 stations. The construction has been divided into seven packages.
