Egg is a perishable product and its price varies every day as per the demand and supply cycle. In October, eggs were being sold in the wholesale market for Rs 413 for per 100 pieces. Now the price has risen to Rs. 467 per 100 pieces. It reflects on the retail market also. Customers have to shell out Rs 10 more for a dozen as the price has risen Rs 60 to Rs 70 per dozen. Rajendra Bhosale, Executive member of the National Egg Coordination Committee said, "This trend can be seen in every year. Eggs consumption increases throughout the state after Dasara and Diwali. Even the production is low in winter. So eggs become costlier as demand increases and supply decreases." As per NECC, normal egg consumption is 75 lakh to 80 lakhs per day in Mumbai, but in winter it goes up to 90 to 95 lakhs.
