Man duped of Rs 20L with ‘new DeMo’ ruse

MUMBAI: A gang of five who spread rumours that the government planned to demonetise Rs 500 notes and promised to exchange them with Rs 100 notes duped a Nalasopara resident to the tune of Rs 20 lakh, the police said.A cheating case has been filed against five unidentified persons at Vikhroli Parksite police station. According to the police, Dilip Ambaukar a Nalasopara resident, had through a common friend met one of the five men who told him that Rs 500 notes would soon be banned and new notes were likely to be issued by the central bank.“The person told him that if he exchanged Rs 500 notes, they would give him Rs 100 notes and 10% extra. Police have appealed to the public not to fall prey to rumours. But the five men vanished,” said a police officer.The police said they are trying to identify the gang members who met the complainant at various public places.
